In the 19th century, Catherine McAuley opened The House of Mercy on Baggot Street to serve the poor of Dublin, in her native land of Ireland. Over 170 years later, the followers of Catherine span the globe bringing the mission and works of mercy to the poor. Although the Sisters of Mercy of the Chicago Region no longer sponsor a particular mission in a third world country, members of the community do serve in missions throughout Latin America.
